Exam Overview
NICET Level II practice exam, updated for 2026
Prepare for the NICET Level II Electrical Power Testing exam with practice questions designed around the updated content outline effective October 5, 2026.
This practice exam focuses on the knowledge expected of an intermediate-level technician working under limited supervision. Topics include electrical safety, equipment inspection and testing, documentation, electrical theory, and basic troubleshooting.
Exam content
The updated NICET Level II exam uses the following content areas and approximate weighting:
| Content area | Percentage of official exam |
|---|---|
| Safety Procedures | 20–30% |
| General Testing | 32–42% |
| Documentation and Standards | 13–23% |
| Electrical Theory and Troubleshooting | 15–25% |
General Testing represents the largest portion of the exam. Your preparation should cover transformers, cables, switchgear, circuit breakers, rotating machinery, protective relays, grounding systems, batteries, and other electrical power equipment.
You should also understand how to compare test results, recognize equipment nameplate information, interpret common electrical device function numbers, and apply fundamental electrical principles to troubleshooting situations.
Study recommendations
Start with the updated NICET outline. Use the four content areas to organize your review and identify topics that need more attention. Focus on the responsibilities of a Level II technician performing standard electrical tests under limited supervision.
Study the listed references. NICET’s 2026 Level II reference list includes:
- ANSI/NETA ATS-2025 and ANSI/NETA MTS-2023
- Electrical Power Equipment Maintenance and Testing, 2nd edition, by Paul Gill
- IEEE 81-2025
- IEEE C37.2-2022
- IEEE C57.12.00-2000
- NFPA 70, 2026 edition
- NFPA 70B, 2023 edition
- NFPA 70E, 2024 edition
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910
- Ugly’s Electrical References, 2023 edition
These are study resources. NICET does not permit candidates to bring references into the test center.
Practice applying testing procedures. Review visual and mechanical inspections, insulation resistance testing, winding resistance, circuit breaker testing, relay testing, grounding measurements, and other common field procedures. Understand instrument selection, safe connections, and the purpose of each test.
Strengthen your safety knowledge. Review lockout/tagout, establishing electrically safe work conditions, PPE selection, test equipment safety, and recognizing hazardous conditions. Understand when work must stop and additional guidance is required.
Build your troubleshooting skills. Practice electrical calculations, interpret equipment nameplates and one-line diagrams, compare test measurements with expected values, and identify possible causes of abnormal results.
Review your answers. After each practice attempt, study the explanations and revisit weak areas before trying again.
Timed exam-style practice
The full-length practice exam gives you a structured way to practice pacing and check your preparation.
- 136 questions
- 155-minute time limit
The question count and time limit match NICET’s published 2026 Level II format. PSA questions are independently developed and do not reproduce the official exam.
Use each timed attempt as a readiness check. Allow time between attempts to review missed concepts and strengthen weaker areas. A practice score does not guarantee a passing result on the certification exam.
You also have unlimited access to the internal practice quizzes and exams included with your subscription while your subscription remains active. Use these for repetition and topic review between full-length attempts.
